Research Interests

I work mostly in that misty area where microeconomic theory meets micro data; popularly known as applied microeconometrics. My main interests are in the economics of the family (with particular emphasis on intrahousehold allocation); demand analysis; consumption and saving and modelling heterogeneity for applied work.

Biographical Sketch

Born in London in 1946. Married to Lisbeth Browning. We have lived in various place over the years: Copenhagen, England, Canada, Paris and the U.S.. Now we live in Oxford. We have three children: Allan (born 1966), Thomas (1973) and Maja (1985). We have four grandchildren: Niklas (1993), Kaya (1997), Cassius (2001) and Zoe (2007).

Education: Left school at 15 and worked for a few years as a telephone engineer. In 1976 began studies in economics and anthropology at the London School of Economics. Received B.Sc. (1979) and M.Sc. (1981) from LSE and Ph.D. from Tilburg in 1993.

Employment history: First academic job was as a Lecturer in Mathematical Economics at Bristol University. Professor of Economics at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada for 15 years. Also held visiting teaching posts at Princeton, Stanford and various other congenial places. Professor of Economics at the University of Copenhagen from 1998-2006 and Director of the Centre for Applied Microeconometrics (CAM), Copenhagen, 2001-2006. Currently Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford and Fellow of Nuffield College.
