Research InterestsEconomic Growth, Competitiveness, Innovation, and Productivity. International Trade and Development. Macroeconomics. Industrial Organisation and Labour Economics. Applied econometric modelling, especially the macroeconometrics of consumption, housing, earnings, and regions. Research ProjectsI have three main research interests: First, I am interested in the theory and empirics of the long-run growth process. At the moment, I am involved in a project on growth during and after the Bretton Woods era with Padraig Dixon, Luca Nunziata and Chris Wallace. This project utilizes newly available data on OECD performance since WWII, along with new panel data techniques, and incorporates insights from the global games literature. A very good starting point for thinking about economic growth is the Economic Growth Resources maintained by Jon Temple. Second, I am interested in international macroeconomics. I am working on the links between global games and macroeconomics in work with Prasanna Gai and Kang Tan on the choice of exchange rate regime by countries and its effects, funded by the Australian Research Council. Third, I am also interested in more traditional macroeconometric issues, such as UK house prices, consumption, and labour markets, working mostly with John Muellbauer and Anthony Murphy. Books and MonographsI have been involved in a number of major projects that have appeared as books and monographs: In 2005, I was a member of a team commissioned by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to look at Affordability Targets: Implications for Housing Supply. In 2003, Iain McLean, Chris Wlezien and I published a report, commisioned by the ODPM/HMT, on 'Identifying the flow of domestic and European expenditure into the English regions' . The Government's response is available at the ODPM website. On 23 October 1998, the Bank of England published the Openness and Growth Conference Volume, which contains three of my papers, written with James Proudman and Stephen Redding.
