ASS Sociology



The sociology teaching for the M.Sc. ASS involves lectures, classes, and essays. The rubric covers: “British social institutions and social structure. The distribution of life chances in relation to education, social mobility, and employment opportunities. The significance of class, race, age, and gender. The character, methods, and limitations of empirical sociological enquiry. The meaning of community, theories of deviance, and the nature of bureaucracies and the professions.

Lectures (Tuesdays, 9am, DPIR LR, Michaelmas 2001):

  1. Introduction on the nature of social science.
  2. Is Britain a meritocracy?
  3. Should social work aim to prevent child deaths?
  4. What are organisations?
  5. Fertility: a test case for ‘rational actor’ models?
  6. Gender, work, and evolutionary psychology.

Note: if printing ‘overheads’ from the list below, it makes sense to use the pages-per-sheet option (usually found under the properties tab in the print command) to save paper and achieve a resonable printout size.
