Nuffield College Junior Common Room |

Nuffield College is a small postgraduate college, specialising in the social sciences. Established in 1937, the College is located in the centre of Oxford - the original designs are believed to have been exotic but at the insistence of its endower, William Morris, the final construction was completed in Cotswold stone. Within the monastic staircases, rooms are bright, comfortable and well equipped, comprising a mixture of offices and study-bedrooms for those students who choose to reside in College. Members of college formally study within one of three subject groups: Economics, Sociology and Politics. However in recent years students have chosen to pursue work in economic and/or social history, international development and diplomatic history. The subject groups hold weekly seminars throughout the academic year and these are well attended. Nuffield catering is renowned in Oxford. Lunch is busy everyday as fellows and students mix freely at long tables, and students also have the right to dine at High Table and bring guests. Despite its small numbers the College has a lively social life. This centres on the Junior Common Room (shared by graduates and fellows) and the student-managed bar, which recently underwent extensive refurbishment. Sport is also very popular as an antidote to the intensity of postgraduate study. Nuffield teams compete with both JCR and MCR colleges at football, cricket, and tennis and in the last few years the College has boasted Blues in ice hockey, rowing and squash. Nuffielders share the beautiful and well appointed Worcester College Sports Fields, which are only a short walk away. |
