Marmotte

Marmottes are very common in the Alps, the Pyrenees and large areas of the US. (In the US they are called Groundhogs - remember that film?) This photo doesn't really do them justice because they are really comical characters. They are about twice the size of a domestic rabbit and live in burrows in extended family units. In the summer evenings they come out to graze and play. Usually one marmotte will stand guard (sitting up as if begging) whilst the young ones chase one another around. If you get too close then the guard marmotte whistles and everyone vanishes back down into the burrow.
