Shepherds in the Pyrenees and the Alps always have two dogs to look after their flocks. They have a dog for herding the sheep, as we do in England; but they also have a dog to guard the flock against predators such as wolves and eagles (which can carry off young lambs). The herd dogs are wiry and fast, whereas the guard dogs are big and fierce - just like the one in this photo. |
