The Sierra Nevada mountains |
The Sierras run the length of California and contain many wonderful National Parks, such as Yosemite shown here. This picture shows the mountain of El Capitan across the Yosemite Valley. The sheer granite faces of El Cap are renowned for their superb Big Wall climbing, and you can see why. The right-hand ski stick points the way up the Salathe Wall; the light-coloured wall with the dark smudge in the middle is the North America Wall. Climbing a route like this is serious stuff and takes most rock climbers about three days (they sleep on the rock face). |
