Woodpecker

Woody
Do you feel that you are banging your head against a brick wall at work? Then you will understand what the woodpecker goes through all day long. Look on the bright side, at least you don't have to eat grubs! Woodpeckers are easy to spot because their hammering is very noisy. This fellow was hard at work whilst we were cross-country skiing down the Methow Valley in the Cascade Mountains. The weather in Washington State is notoriously wet, which is why they have all those coffee houses in Seattle. But the weather in the nearby Methow Valley is usually much better because it lies further inland on the eastern side of the mountains. Mountain ranges always create a 'rain shadow'. As the clouds are forced upwards over the mountains the cold air causes the water vapour to condense and fall as rain or snow, so the weather is drier and sunnier on the other side.
